How to choose a science fair project

Start from a question, not a demo

A volcano that always erupts the same way has nothing to measure. Ask something with an answer you don't already know: does X change Y, and by how much?

Check the calendar before the topic

Plant growth and mould projects need weeks; a physics or engineering test can be done in an afternoon. Work backwards from your fair date and leave room to repeat a trial.

Make sure you can measure it

You need a number you can put in a table — distance, time, temperature, mass, count. If the only result is "it looked cooler", pick a different project.

Match the level and the safety

Every project here lists its cost, time, hazards and whether adult supervision is needed, so you can rule a project in or out before buying anything.

From question to results

  1. Step 1

    Research question

    One sentence, specific and testable: "Does the amount of salt in water change how quickly it freezes?" Narrow beats broad every time.

  2. Step 2

    Hypothesis

    Written before you test, in the form: if I change this, then that will happen, because of this reason. Being wrong is fine — being vague is not.

  3. Step 3

    Variables

    One independent variable you change, one dependent variable you measure, and a written list of everything you hold constant. Each project page states all three.

  4. Step 4

    Procedure

    Numbered steps detailed enough that a stranger could repeat your experiment exactly, plus at least three trials at every setting.

  5. Step 5

    Data collection

    Fill in the project's data table as you go, with units in the column headings. Record surprises and mistakes — judges reward honesty about them.

  6. Step 6

    Results and analysis

    Average your trials, graph the trend, and say plainly what the numbers show and where the error came from before you write the conclusion.

    Project title, your name, grade and teacher.

    One clear, testable question.

    Background

    What you learned before testing, in your own words.

    Hypothesis

    If… then… because… — written before you experiment.

    Materials & procedure

    Detailed enough for someone else to repeat exactly.

    Results

    Your data table plus a graph, with units labelled.

    Conclusion

    Was the hypothesis supported? What does the data actually show?
